Smartphones contain some of the same critical components that traditional PCs do, and therefore are just as vulnerable to failure as any other computer device. To protect against data loss, you should back up the data on your Android on a regular basis. While you can use certain apps to copy your files and settings to the cloud, that might mean putting confidential data into the hands of strangers or rooting your phone to get the most out of an app. As an alternative, install the Android Software Development Kit to your PC and run the Android Debug Bridge, or ADB, command-line tool to create the backup on your computer.

Touch "Settings" on the Home or Apps screen, touch "About Phone" and then scroll to the bottom of the screen.

Tap "Build Number" at least seven times until the message "You Are Now a Developer!" appears on-screen.

Return to Settings, touch "Developer Options" under System and then select "USB Debugging."

Download and install the Java Development Kit from Oracle and the Android SDK from Google (links in Resources).

Press "Windows-Q" to open Apps, enter "SDK" into the search field and then right-click "Android SDK Manager."

Select "Run as Administrator" from the menu bar that appears on the bottom of the screen.

Expand "Tools" and then check "Android-SDK Platform Tools." Click the "Install" button to add the selected packages to your system.

Connect your Android to the computer and then select "Cancel" in the pop-up menu that appears.

Press "Windows-Q," type "Notepad" into the search field and then press "Enter."

Return to Android SDK Manager and type into Notepad the folder location displayed in the SDK Path field. Press "Ctrl-A" and then "Ctrl-C" to copy the file path to the clipboard.

Open Command Prompt from Apps and input the following commands into the console, pressing "Enter" after each:

cd\

cd

adb backup -apk -shared -all -f C:\android_backup.ab

For "", right-click inside the console and select "Paste" from the context menu.

Enter a password on the Full Backup screen on your Android smartphone and then touch "Back Up My Data."

Tips

  • Windows should automatically detect and install your phone drivers when you connect the Android to your PC.
  • To restore from a backup, follow the same process as above to connect your phone to the computer and navigate to the SDK path from Command Prompt. Type "adb restore <file>" (without the quotations here and throughout) into the console. Replace "<file>" with the appropriate path (such as "C:\Users\Example\mybackup.ab") and then press "Enter." Touch "Restore My Data" on your device to recover your data.
